Twin Village Art Society History
by Alice Dobrowolski
The Twin Village Art Society was formed by a group of artists that showed their
art at the Depew's 75th Celebration in 1969. After the Depew Celebration this group decided to form
an Art Society and ran an ad in the Depew Herald inviting artists that are interested.
The date was around 1970-71.
They met at the Depew Library on Columbia Avenue in Depew and named the organization
"The Twin Village Art Society" to represent Depew and Lancaster. They elected
Gen Sprucebank as president. Other officers were Jackie Nolder vice-President
and Natalie Lewandowski for Secretary. For a few years the meetings were held at the Depew Library, then at the Polish Falcons
on Columbia and Warner Avenues in Depew. Now they are held at the
Municipal Building in Lancaster.
For many years the Society held an annual juried out door show for members and non-members
on Memorial Day at the Veteran's Park in Depew on Terrace Blvd.
Later they moved the outdoor show to the village of Lancaster on the 4th of July,
first few years at Brookfield Park, then to Fireman's Park in the village and later other sites.
There were many indoor Art Shows such as at the Lancaster Historical Building, Carrneige Art center
in Tonawanda, Eastern Hills Mall, various Nursing Homes, St. Joseph's Hospital, restaurants,
Erie County Building downtown, local Banks and even a Liquor Store.
The Society has had many outstanding officers and even had a Principal Frank Kozub
from Depew High School as President. Different officers and new members with new ideas
are keeping this organization in existence.
